Heat cable on pipes for pipe tracing system

Warmzone pipe trace systems can be installed for pipe freeze prevention as well as process temperature maintenance installations. The self-regulating heat cable is UL listed and approved for hazardous and non-hazardous applications. It can be used for plastic or metal pipe freeze protection and flow maintenance of pipes, tanks, valves.

The self-regulating characteristics of the heat cable means that it automatically varies its power output in response to pipe temperature changes. When the ambient temperature rises, the electrical resistance increases and the consumption of electricity decreases. This ensures energy-efficient operation. The cable will also not overheat or burnout – even when touching or overlapping.

Additionally, because of the self-regulating properties, a thermostat may not be necessary in some applications. With the optional outer jacket, the heating cable is resistant to watery and inorganic chemicals and protected against abrasion and impact damage. RHSR is suitable for use in explosion-hazardous areas up to a maximally admissible work-place temperature of +149° F (65° C).

Warmzone Roof Deicing Panels

Prevent Ice Dams from Forming

As we look forward to a warm summer, many residents in the north east are still reeling from the costly effects of record snowfall. Ice dams continue to be winter’s biggest culprit when it comes to roof damage.

Warm air slowly escapes from the home and into the attic where it warms the roof, causing snow to melt. As the runoff trickles down the roof, it reaches the eaves. Because the eaves extend out over the edges of the house, there is no warm air from the attic below. In the evening, the runoff will reach the cold eaves and refreeze. There, the ice continues to build up as more snow melts. The wall of ice causes water to build up behind it, refreezing every time the temperature dips below 32°Fahrenheit.

When the water pools up behind these ice dams, it can seep into tiny cracks in the roofing material where it refreezes and expands. This repeated process can eventually compromise the structure. Water can slowly work its way into the attic and then drip through the ceiling or down walls. Oftentimes the homeowner is not aware of any problem until significant water damage has occurred.

Warmzone offers an ideal way to protect homes and businesses from water damage. RoofHeat panels feature attractive aluminum panels with self-regulating heat cable. The panels are installed long the roof edge between the waterproof membrane and the shingle. The roof heating panels are supplied in 4-foot lengths and can be cut to length on site. Self-regulating heat cable is channeled through the panel, creating an effective roof deicing system that efficiently warms the roof edges help prevent ice dams from forming. The aluminum panels can also be installed in roof valleys to facilitate runoff.

Brutal Winters Predicted

Scientists Predict Extreme Winters to Continue for the Next 30 Years

Climatologist John Casey, a former space shuttle engineer and NASA consultant, believes that we’re in for decades of unusually cold winters with greater snowfall. And Casey isn’t alone in his claims. Noted Russian astrophysicist Habibullo I. Abdussamatov has even gone so far as to argue that a new mini-ice age has just begun.

While Casey isn’t proclaiming the dawning of a new ice age, he does say that the facts indicate we are entering a new cold era. In a recent interview with Newsmax, Casey declared, “All you have to do is trust natural cycles and follow the facts, and that leads you to the inevitable conclusion that the sun controls the climate, and that a new cold era has begun.”

According to weather experts, a decline in solar activity has kick-started a major alteration in global climate that is projected to last at least 30 years. The prospect of frigid winters with record snowfall for the next several decades is not a pleasant one, but there are steps one can take to ease the pain of the upcoming “mega winters”.

Installing an automated snow melting system can ease the burden considerably, and even save you money in the long run. Warmzone offers affordable snow and ice melting options designed to keep your driveway, sidewalks, steps, and roofs clear of ice and snow – eliminating the need for manual snow removal. Every snowmelt system utilizes industry leading ClearZone heat cable that is easy to install and can be used in almost every type of snow melting application. Available on spools or in mats with tape backing for easy roll-out installation. (There is no mesh backing to impede concrete pours, making Warmzone solutions the optimum choice when it comes to installing radiant heat in concrete projects.) Self-regulating heat cable and RoofHeat STEP systems are used for roof deicing.

The Advantages of Warmzone Snow Melting Mats

The Tape Backing of ClearZone Mats Facilitates Proper Concrete Pours
Radiant heated driveways offer many benefits; however, a snow melting system is the sum of its parts and only as good as its design and installation. While there are many products available, Warmzone systems have proven to be the clear favorites among professional installers. These tried and tested solutions are carefully considered by Warmzone “resident” professionals with deep industry knowledge and experience. What does this mean for you? When dealing with Warmzone, you have a wide selection of affordable products that outperform the competition in all phases of installation and performance.

Consider a recent conversation between a Warmzone professional and an experienced installer. The installer preferred to avoid using electric snow melting mats based on an experience with a competitor’s heating mats years earlier. During the concrete installation, he noticed a significant issue. The mesh backing on the competitor’s mats impeded the concrete pour, which dramatically affected the quality of the concrete installation. When the concrete cannot flow through the mats, small air pockets can result, resulting in a weakened driveway that is susceptible to cracking and collapsing.

ClearZone snow melting heat cable in mat.

For the installer’s next radiant heat install, he opted for heat cable off the spool to ensure a proper concrete pour. As effective as the cable can be, cable off the spool requires more installation time, as the cable must be secured to the remesh with zip ties every 6 to 12 inches.

Shortly after that installation, the installer made a business-boosting discovery. After expressing his concerns with Warmzone, the installer learned that Warmzone snow melting mats offer significant advantages over similar products. Because of the unique construction of Warmzone snow melting mats, concrete maintains its integrity by enjoying an unimpeded pour. Not only is Warmzone heat cable the premier heating cable on the market, but the mats have become the solution of choice for concrete installers.

When it comes to performance and durability, the spacing between the runs of cable, tape and mesh backing truly matter. Warmzone’s ClearZone radiant snow melting mats utilize tape (without a mesh backing) to properly maintain their overall integrity during installation. Because ClearZone mats don’t include a mesh backing, concrete can flow through the mats during a fresh concrete pour, ensuring a strong driveway that will not buckle or cave over time, while enjoying superior performance characteristics.

The ClearZone snowmelt system is an industry leader, and the premier snow and ice melting solution for both commercial and residential applications. ClearZone electric snow melting cable is extremely durable and versatile, and can be used for a variety of residential and commercial applications, from fresh concrete pours, to installation under hot asphalt and stone pavers. On the spool, ClearZone cable allows for greater flexibility in terms of custom layouts, including hard-to-reach, intricate configurations for steps and sidewalks.

Whether you’re embarking on a radiant heat project yourself, or you’ve enlisted the assistance of a contractor yourself, you’d be wise to enlist the help of Warmzone. Warmzone provides professional system design/layout, so you know all the power requirements and technical specs before a foot of cable is installed. You’ll also have access to free installation support from an experienced pro. For more information about Warmzone’s products and services, call 888.488.9276.

The Future of Roof Deicing

Clear Roof Valleys and Edges faster with a RoofHeat STEP Roof Deicing System

After record snowfalls this year, a spring assessment of your roof may lead you to consider a radiant roof heating solution, particularly for your roof valleys and edges. Heating these trouble spots is a great way to prevent damage as a result of ice dams and seepage. With a razor thin element, superior heating capability and inherent flexibility, a low-voltage RoofHeat STEP roof deicing system is the ideal option for heating roof valleys and edges.

Warmzone roof deicing systems can eliminate costly ice dams, the number one source of roof damage. Because the eaves and roof edges do not have any heat warming the roof from below, they’re much colder and prone to ice buildup from snow melting higher on the roof. As snow up higher on the roof melts, the water freezes when it reaches the colder eaves, creating an ice dam that forces water to back up behind it. With nowhere to go, the water seeps through roof decking and refreezes again at night, expanding small cracks where the water eventually works its way down onto ceilings and walls, resulting in costly water damage and mold.

An Industry Leading Solution

The RoofHeat STEP roof deicing system is fast becoming the roof heating system of choice among professional roofers. Unlike other radiant heating options, the heating element used for this system is not a cable, but rather a thin polymer that can be nailed, stapled and cut on site, so it’s easy to work with and install. The self-regulating semi-conductive polymer heating element is polypropylene fused during fabrication to achieve water proofing and protection from alkaline or salt damage, and can be mounted under the shingles for discreet heating of roof valleys and edges.

Low-voltage roof deicing system being installed

Installing a roof deicing solution now can preserve and protect a new roof installation from snow and ice buildup for years to come. Besides saving you big bucks in the “improve, repair and replace” department, a RoofHeat STEP roof deicing system can save you the time and effort of having to manually remove snow and ice.

These fully automated systems feature an activation device/snow sensor that detects precipitation and temperature. When conditions warrant, the sensor signals the controller when then sends power to the heating element to heat your roof.

A RoofHeat STEP roof deicing system can keep roof valleys and edges clear and dry before, during and after a major snow event. The system also consists of a transformer that steps down high voltage to low voltage while controlling a specific section of the roof deicing system. During system operation, the transformers monitor power and output to the heating element to ensure safe, accurate and efficient performance.

Premier RoofHeat Gutter Trace Systems

Warmzone Self-regulating Heat Cable is the Ideal Solution for Heating Gutters and Downspouts
Finally spring has arrived, along with the drip, drip, drip of melting snow from the roof tops onto the pavement below. As meteorologists predict several more years of extreme winter weather, now may be the time to add a RoofHeat radiant gutter trace system to your list of home improvement projects this spring.

Heavy snow and ice can damage roof gutters and downspouts, and ice dams often result in costly roof and water damage. Keeping gutters and downspouts clear of ice helps to facilitate runoff which dramatically reduces the risks to your home.

Self-regulating heat cable construction

When gutters and downspouts are blocked, and there is nowhere for the precipitation above to go, melted snow can pool up on your roof or run over the ice and drips down onto the ground. As this ice builds up along your roof edges during winter months, it can melt and refreeze several times, leading to roof damage and water seepage inside your home. Now for some good news—a Warmzone gutter melt system is a truly efficient, affordable home improvement project that can keep your gutters and downspouts free and clear from ice and snow buildup every winter.

The backbone of the system is Warmzone’s durable self-regulating roof deicing cable, one of the most recommended roof heating solutions available for roofs, gutters and drain pipes. (See what separates Warmzone’s self-regulating heat cable from the competition. Self-regulating RoofHeat cable is constructed to be safe, durable and extremely efficient. This energy-wise cable has an irradiated conductive core that increases the heat output as the outside temperature falls, and decreases heat output as the temperature rises. With a rugged, durable outer construction, the heat cable can withstand harsh conditions for continuous use during the winter months.

Roof in need of a roof deicing and gutter melt system.RoofHeat deicing cable is part of a fully-automated gutter trace and roof deicing system designed to keep roof gutters and trouble spots clear of snow and ice buildup. A self-regulating heat cable system is controlled by automatic sensors capable of detecting when snow is on the way. Once detected, the sensor signals the control unit, activating the snowmelt system only when necessary to keep gutters and downspouts clear of ice and snow. The system is fully automated so there’s no switches to flip the system on or off, and operates only when you need it.

These systems are customizable and can accommodate virtually any size, type and construction of your roof. And self-regulating roof deicing cable can also be combined with other recommended Warmzone systems such as the RoofHeat STEP deicing system to create an optimal solution for you. Electric vs. Hydronic Snowmelt Systems

Which Radiant Heat System is Best for You?

Old man winter is providing plenty of incentive for many of us to purchase a hydronic or electric radiant snow melting system, and Warmzone can help you settle on which system to choose for melting snow and ice from your driveway. The good news—both hydronic and electric snowmelt systems are effective, efficient, and surprisingly affordable solutions to keeping exterior porches, walkways and driveways clear and dry.

Hydronic systems heat a mixture of hot water and propylene glycol (anti-freeze), then circulate it through a network of polymer Pex tubing installed in asphalt, concrete, or just about any other medium. The water is circulated from a centrally located water heater or boiler through the Pex tubing to warm your sidewalk or driveway. These systems feature condensing boilers that can be powered by any energy source, including natural gas, wood, oil or even solar panels, making operation extremely affordable.

Paver heated sidewalk

Electric radiant snowmelt systems can also be installed in a variety of mediums including hot asphalt, mortar beds, under pavers, and concrete etc. Prior to a concrete pour, heat cable is laid down and secured to the remesh with wire ties. The system’s activation device (in-pavement or aerial-mount snow sensor), communicates with a compact master control unit to send power to the embedded heat cable which quickly and evenly distributes heat to prevent ice and snow build up.

Both snow melting systems feature energy efficient, advanced technology backed by impressive warranties. Generally, hydronic is the best pick for larger-scale, commercial snow melting applications because of the potential for lower operating costs; whereas electric radiant heat systems are often the more preferred solution for residential or home improvement projects. Hydronic snow melting systems require a larger investment upfront. They rely on a high-efficiency heater or boiler to function properly, and they cannot be retrofitted in existing driveways, so in addition to the system, you’re looking at the cost of a driveway tear out and pour. The systems also need their own dedicated mechanical room.

Electric radiant snow melting systems feature rapid response times and are extremely efficient. They rely on a sensor and a small control unit to operate, so the initial cost up front is decidedly smaller. If you want to save a few bucks on installation, Warmzone’s ClearZone electric radiant heat cable comes on a spool or in pre-configured mats that can be laid out for quick, easy installation. And, ClearZone electric radiant heat cable installation is very easy to customize, so you can configure your system to ideally suit your budget and snow melting needs. You can heat the entire driveway or a strip up the middle or just two 24-inch tire tracks. Electric systems grant you lots of custom options.

Probably the biggest incentive for choosing electric radiant snow melting systems is their efficiency in removing ice and snow. Designed to produce 30-50 watts per square foot, ClearZone radiant heat cable has the quickest response time (time to heat the driveway upon system startup) of any snow melting system on the market). Hydronic systems rely on hot water. More time is required to heat the water before it is subsequently pumped through the system, so the response time is considerably less.

If you’ve had it “up to here” with snow this winter, it’s not too late to purchase and install a snow melting system. For more information on hydronic and electric radiant snow melting systems, contact Warmzone at 888.488.9276.

Why Warmzone’s Self-Regulating Heat Cable is a Cut Above the Competition

Banish Snow and Ice from your Roof and Gutters, and Protect Pipes with the Industry’s Top Self-Regulating Heat Trace Cable

With sub-zero temperatures upon us, the last thing most of us want to do is fool around with manual outdoor snow and ice removal. As the temperatures maintain their frosty grip on much of the country, installing a radiant heat solution for your roof, gutters and pipes is a wise, potentially cost-savings move. Featuring a superior outer jacket and carbon core, making installation in frigid conditions possible, Warmzone self-regulating cable truly is the best choice.

What makes Warmzone’s self-regulating cable unique? The outer jacket of other leading brands of heat cable tends to “bubble” or separate from the cable core when the cable is manipulated for turns. These irregularities create stress points on the cable that allow water to reach the core, causing erratic heating and eventual cable failure. To better illustrate this point, consider the photos shown. At a bend radius of about 2 inches, the outer jacket of other popular heating cables bubbles and pulls away from the core, creating a visible stress point prone to water seepage and eventual failure.

Comparing heat trace cable bending radius

At a bend radius of 1½ inches, the outer jacket of the Warmzone cable is smooth, showing no signs of bubbling. The durable outer jacket is more flexible, so it minimizes “puckering”, even at a tight bend radius. These performance differences are extremely important in applications where tight cable manipulation is critical, including gutters, roofs and pipe tracing.

Warmzone self-regulating heat cable can also be installed at much lower temperatures than most, and that’s critical if you’re in a region prone to colder conditions and in need of a solution right now. That’s because the minimum installation temperature for most self-regulating heat cables is 32 – 40°F. At temperatures lower than this, the carbon becomes brittle and prone to breaking when bent or manipulated; and the outer jacket of most competitive cables also tends to stiffen, making it difficult to safely install in cold weather.

Warmzone self-regulating heat trace cable with durable outer jacket

The high quality carbon center of Warmzone’s self-regulating radiant heating cable is much more resilient, and can withstand installation temperatures as low as 0°F, making them a safe bet for installation in some rather frosty conditions. Factor in the flexibility of the outer jacket in the same weather and you can expect easier installation and more reliable performance.

If you’ve decided on Warmzone radiant heating cable, perhaps the hardest sell is finding the right installation team for the job on short notice. Warmzone can help with that too. They’ve forged deep relationships with wholesalers and general contractors across the country to deliver the most advanced, reliable snow melting solutions around, and they’re a great resource for installation support. New Panels with GFEP Breakers

Warmzone Offers Ground Fault Equipment Protection (GFEP) with Snowmelt System Panels

If you’ve been installing radiant heated driveways, roofs and gutter melting solutions for any length of time, you’ve most likely had to seek out ground fault equipment protectors (GFEP units) with breakers to properly install these systems. Traditionally many companies sell complete heated driveway systems to qualified, licensed electricians and installers; however, these customers are still instructed that they must find GFEP units with breakers to properly install their system. Warmzone has always emphasized this need, but now, things are changing.

In keeping with its commitment to provide professional builders with the best products, service and convenience, Warmzone radiant heated driveway systems now include GFEP (ground fault equipment protection) breakers with its panels, saving you time and money. If you’re an electrician or an installer, shopping Warmzone means you don’t have to scramble to track down these breakers for an installation. You’ll get just the right GFEP and breaker for the job.

Large heated paver driveway

What is a ground fault protector, and why is it so important to a heated snow melting system? Basically, a ground fault is an electrical event caused by an insulation loss between a live conductor and an exposed conductive part that causes flow of current to the ground. (In the case of a heated driveway, the conductive part of a heated driveway is the heat cable.) This electrical event may cause serious problems to radiant heated driveway electrical systems and equipment, as most short circuits can start as undetected ground faults.

A ground fault equipment detector or GFEP is a device that is intended to protect heated driveway equipment against damaging line-to-ground currents, as are those emitted by electric radiant heat cable, by disconnecting all un-grounded conductors of the faulted circuit. By adding a ground fault equipment protector (GFEP) to a snow melting system, you can detect ground faults immediately, preventing serious damage to heated driveway system components.

The NEMA 4 wall-mounted control panels are rated for outdoor usage and the controller has proven itself as a trusted industry leader. The UL and CUL listed control unit automatically controls gutter and downspout snow and ice melting heaters, and includes the GFEP (ground fault equipment protection) required by the NEC. The unit can also be controlled from an external signal (day/week timer, GSM-module or other signal source). The state-of-the-art components result in providing the best possible performance for heated driveways, roof deicing, and gutter and downspout heating.

Contractors are hailing this advance offered by Warmzone. Ground fault equipment protection included in the Warmzone panels ensures cost savings, convenience, and increased reliability and safety in all your heated driveway installations. To find out more about purchasing a Warmzone snow melting system features a GFEP, call 888.488.9276.

Protect Your Roof and Home

Protect your Roof, Gutters, and Downspouts with a Gutter Melt System from Warmzone

Are you taking care of those who take care of you? Rather, are you taking care of your roof? While it’s natural to not give your roof or gutters a second thought, be sure to take whatever steps you can to protect your roof and enhance its lifespan. One way to do this is by installing an electric roof deicing system.

Roof deicing system installed to heat roof edges

Roofs and gutters in cold weather climates can suffer damage from heavy snow and ice. Ice dams are the most common problem responsible for expensive roof and water damage. Heat rises from the house and attic, warming the roof and melting snow, which then trickles down towards the roof’s edge. But when the runoff reaches the cold eaves, it refreezes and forms the beginnings of an ice dam. This process repeats and as more snow melts it begins to pool behind the band of ice that has formed on the eaves. Water from this pool can seep into cracks and enlarge them as it refreezes to eventually form a path down into your home. Shingles can even come loose due to the contractions and expansion from the change in temperature.

This constant barrage on your roof can lead to water damage and cause mold and mildew growth. The water is often undiscovered until significant damage has occurred, and repairs can be very costly.

Steep roof with icicles in need of a roof deicing system

Warmzone radiant roof heating systems quickly melt heavy ice and snow from gutters and trouble spots on your roof. They can be easily installed in existing roofs to prevent icicles, ice buildup and ice dams from occurring. Moisture buildup from ice dams can seep up under shingles and into the roof decking before making its way into your home and causing significant water damage.

Basic Tips for Installing Snow Melting System
Cable Care – Extreme care must be used to ensure the cables/mats are not damaged when using sharp tools, wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes or heavy machinery.

Check Supply Voltage – Make sure that the supply voltage matches the voltage required for your specific snowmelt product.

Measure Cable Resistance – Remember to always measure, verify and record the actual resistance of the heating element throughout the installation process:
1.  Out of the box
2.  After laying the cable out
3.  After applying the surface material

Never cut the Heat CableHeat cable is resistance cable. When it is shortened it increases the wattage per foot of the cable. Altering the cable in this way can void the warranty and cause the heat cable to fail due to over-temperature.

Laying out Heating Mats – Unroll the heating mat on to the area you want to heat. Fasten the heating mat to the mesh reinforcement using tie-wraps, zip ties or cable strapping. Do not cause the heating cable of the mat to be compressed or strained.

Do not let Cables Touch – Never allow the heating elements to cross, overlap or touch.

Embed the Cable – Whether you’re installing in concrete, asphalt or pavers, make sure that the cable is completely embedded under the surface. If uncovered, it can malfunction in the area of exposure.

Embed the Power Lead – The power lead/heating cable splice and at least 6 inches of the power lead must also be embedded in the paved surface. The remaining power lead should be run through a conduit.

Making Turns with MatsHeating mats can be altered to accommodate drains, obstructions or bends in the layout. To make turns or alter the spacing of the heating cables in mats, only cut the tape – NOT the heating cable.

Ground Sensor Placement – The ground sensor must be placed between the heating cables within the heated area at least 3.3 feet (1 m) from the edge of the area. A minimum distance of 0.41 inches (1 cm) should be maintained between the sensor tube and the heating cable.

Aerial Snow Sensor PlacementAerial sensors should not be placed under eaves but where there is direct exposure to the open sky. Avoid areas that will have delayed or false readings.

Need Power for Your Snowmelt System?

With “Zoning” You can Heat a Large Driveway Area with Minimum Amperage

Are you looking to install a heated driveway system, but you’re not sure if you have enough amperage to power the system? If you want the performance and reliability of an electric snowmelt system, but can’t find the amps to power the system, Warmzone has the solution that makes it possible to still install that dream snowmelt system. Zoning (or staging) your snowmelt system allows you to minimize the power (amps) needed to run your system.  But just how does zoning work?

The Principle Behind Zoning
For demonstration purposes, let’s say you only have two 30-amp breakers available to power your heated driveway. The area of the snow melting system is divided into zones, as shown in the corresponding illustration. (See Zones 1-4.) Each zone has its own snow sensor, and the same power source (breakers) is supplied to each zone.

Snow melting system divided into zones for power usage

The zones are then prioritized. Zone 1 is designated as the most important area which needs to be cleared first. When the sensor in Zone 1 detects snow, it signals the controller to activate the system, heating the area until Zone 1 is clear of snow.

After Zone 1 is cleared, the breakers then shift power to Zone 2. Zone 2 then energizes and melts the snow. After Zone 2 is cleared, the breakers shift power to Zone 3, clearing Zone 3 before then powering Zone 4.

Summary
Two 30-amp breakers power Zone 1. After Zone 1 is clear, the power switches over to Zone 2. When Zone 2 has been cleared, power is sent to Zone 3, and then to Zone 4. Using Warmzone’s cycling system, the entire snowmelt area can be powered by two 30-amp breakers.

Warmzone’s industry leading cycling system is the industry leading zoning solution because it utilizes a “smart” feature.  For example, if the snow in Zone 3 has melted before the zone is activated, then there is no need for Zone 3 to energize. The sensor in Zone 3 would detect that there is no snow, and therefore not trigger the system to activate. This saves money by operating only when it is needed.

Other zoning systems activate by a set time. These systems cycle between zones, regardless if a zone has been cleared of snow or not. So if Zone 1 is partially melted, and the timer switches to Zone 2, neither area will be fully cleared. This creates much longer melt times. Using Warmzone’s cycling system; the priority area will always be melted, thus allowing for real time usage of the heating system.

Record Snowfall Predicted

Record Shattering Winter is Just Around the Corner
Weather experts at the National Weather Service (NWS) and meteorologists have boldly predicted that there is a 99 percent chance that a massive cold-front will hit the U.S. sooner in the year than has ever happened. According to Dr. Boris Scvediok, a doctor of global weather sciences, the early winter blast is estimated to produce record-breaking snow storms throughout the entire United States. Meteorologists are even warning that many U.S. residents could see up to 50 times the amount of snow compared to years past.

Because snowfall is predicted to arrive as soon as early October, the average accumulative snow for the 2014 season is expected to be five to ten times that of normal. In other words, this is the type of winter that Americans need to prepare for. Edward F. Blankenbaker, Senior Administrator of Meteorologists, told the media that this year will likely be a once-in-a-lifetime kind of snowy winter.

“Pretty much everyone will see snow like they never have in their lives. Most younger people don’t even know what an actual blizzard looks like, but by the end of March, they will be seasoned survivalists,” Blankenbaker said.

Naturally, a radiant snow melting system is an excellent way to get a leg up on Mother Nature, but having a heated driveway and/or walkways is just one part of the solution. Americans will need to minimize their travel plans and make sure that their vehicles have a weather emergency kit. The Northeast, Ohio Valley, and the Midwestern states are expected to get hit the hardest.

In addition to the impending severe winter weather, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) predicts supply and demand could cause shortages, causing the prices of some staples like bread and milk to increase substantially. FDA spokesperson Rebecca Miller suggests alternatives in preparation of the coming months.

“We are encouraging that you go out and purchase bulk amounts of dry, powdered milk which can be stored in your cupboards,” FDA spokesperson Rebecca Miller suggests. “This will prevent frantic trips to grocery stores and super markets as the onslaught of storms begin to fall upon your respected region.”

Public safety organizations are also encouraging consumers to prepare themselves for brutal winter conditions by obtaining the proper necessities. According to James Satterfield from the National Fire and Safety Advisory Board, preparation can save lives. “Don’t wait until temperatures plummet into a freeze; obtain cold weather clothing and footwear, including wool thermal socks. It is also crucial to have plenty of batteries, candles, weather radios, you name it. Get prepared, it’s coming.” Satterfield warned.

Don’t Slip and Fall into a Lawsuit or Fine this Winter

Protect Yourself and Avoid Fines with an Automated Snow Melting System

Slip and fall injuries on icy driveways and sidewalks are serious business. A simple fall on a slick sidewalk can have far reaching effects, physically and financially. In an effort to protect citizens and minimize liability, state and local governments are passing snow removal laws “encouraging” homeowners to clear their walks. In most cases, if your sidewalks aren’t cleared within 24 hours after a snowstorm, you may be open to fines and vulnerable to lawsuits. Removing snow from driveways and walkways is not an option. In most states, it’s the law.

Heated paver sidewalk

If the coming winter is anything like the Polar Vortex of 2014, snow removal will be a challenge. During some of the heaviest snowstorms last year, homeowners shoveled as many as three times in one day. Snow removal services were inundated, and in some cases unable to reach their clients’ locations. Sidewalks that were cleared iced over, creating hazardous conditions for pedestrians. To solve this problem, many homeowners bought salt and other snow melting chemicals. While this shovel-and-salt method can be effective, it’s time consuming and expensive.

There is a better way to prepare for winter. Warmzone snow melting solutions are a clean, effective way to remove snow, with benefits such as:

  • Fully automated – Warmzone radiant snow melting systems are programmed to detect weather conditions, so they activate as the first snowflake hits the ground to keep your driveways and walkways safe and clear.
  • Maintenance free and easy to operate – Because electric heated driveways have no moving parts, they are maintenance free. In addition to being fully automated, the systems also feature a simple manual override capability to deal with snowdrifts or shaded areas that iced over.
  • Environmentally friendly – If you’re keen on all things green, radiant heat is definitely the way to go. Snow melting chemicals can damage surrounding landscapes, and the residue left behind often ends up in local water supplies.
  • Efficient and effective – At your shoveling best, you can’t outpace a Warmzone heated driveway. Before most of us can slide on a pair of boots, a radiant heat system is operating to keep the entire driveway snow and ice free.

How much will it cost you? Not much, especially when you consider eliminating the possibility of lawsuits and fines. Because Warmzone carries a large selection of snow melting systems and products, they can also put their expertise to work for you to come up with a custom solution that’s affordable and effective. The other good news is that Warmzone provides free installation support to help ensure that your system is installed correctly and performing as expected. You also have access to Warmzone’s extensive online library of radiant heat documentation.

Warmzone is dedicated to offering the most advanced snow melting technologies and components on the market, and the latest iteration of self-regulating heat cable is a great example. The fact is, Warmzone’s industry leading self-regulating heat cable for gutter melt and downspout heating just got even better.

The idea to take an already great radiant heat product and improve upon it for gutter and downspout installations came from installers in the field. Installing roof heating cable requires a heat cable that’s durable, lightweight and easy to work with. The footprint of every roof is different, often involving tight corners and hard to reach places that make laying cable tough. During an installation, cable durability, weight and flexibility all come into play to optimize performance at the roofline. The better the fit, the more secure the cable is for a confident performance. It bends nicely for times when you need to change directions, facilitating quick and proper installation.

The enhanced gutter melt cable is designed for long lasting durability and flexibility and is available in 3, 5, 8, and 10-watts per foot versions at 120 or 200-277 volts. The self-regulating cable is also rated for hazardous locations and features a 10-year manufacturer warranty. New activation devices such as the WZ-2C also enhance fully automated performance. So whether you’re new to home improvement or a diehard do-it-yourselfer, you can be sure you are installing a trusted, long lasting and proven roof deicing solution.

Steep roof with icicles in need of a roof deicing system

Warmzone’s enhanced self-regulating heat cable construction raises the bar for roof gutter and downspout heating. RoofHeat cable features an irradiated, conductive core that increases the heat output as outside temperatures fall, and decreases output as temperatures rise to efficiently, effectively melt snow and ice. This core is protected by a rugged outer construction designed to ensure the cable is functioning safely apart from the sting of a cold winter’s day. This unique construction also makes it durable, safe and extremely energy efficient.

The design changes have taken the top performing heat cable and given it even greater effectiveness and efficiency. When paired up with a Warmzone automation device, the new RoofHeat cable comes through with even faster automated response times to stop precipitation events that lead to unwanted ice damming and roof damage.

In cold weather climates, RoofHeat heat cable is a must for your radiant gutter melt system. It can stand up to extreme weather conditions to protect your home by keeping your gutters and downspouts free of snow and ice. The cable can also be used to heat other trouble spots on your roof. The WS-2C – A New Standard for Aerial-Mount Snow Sensors

New Features Added to the Industry Leading Aerial-Mount Snow Sensor

Warmzone snow melting systems continue to set the gold standard for the radiant heat industry. In addition to the recent enhancements to its industry leading heat cable, Warmzone has also added some performance enhancing features to its state-of-the-art WS-2 snow sensor, resulting in the WS-2C aerial mount snow switch.

Aerial mount snow sensor

The WS-2C snow switch is a culmination of Warmzone research and feedback from experienced installation professionals. Some of the features of the improved snow sensor include:

Universal Input Power Supply (Auto Select Input Voltage)—The universal power supply auto selects the input voltage (100v to 277v AC). This simplifies the installation process and eliminates the need to install voltage jumpers (to select the operating voltage).

Sensitivity Control—Climates vary geographically, so it stands to reason that the conditions leading up to a precipitation event (like a snow storm) will vary too. Warmzone units allow for greater calibration of your snow melting system. The WS-2C aerial-mount snow sensor features unmatched sensitivity control, giving you the optimal customized snow removal solution. The advanced sensor can be programmed for specific conditions to help eliminate false trips, ultimately saving on energy costs.

Increased After-run Delay— Warmzone snow melting systems are designed to remain on for a short period after the storm to prevent the melted snow from turning into ice. The WS-2C offers run delay times of 30-90 minutes, and 2-6 hours. The “delay off” time can be adjusted by using the DELAY ADJUST control.

Power Indicator Light – Indicates when the sensor is powered AND when it is activated.

Redesigned Case – Greatly reduces the chances of warping the cover due to over tightening of the screws.

One of the main reasons Warmzone attracts and retains so many repeat customers is a refusal to stop at “good enough” when it comes to radiant heat solutions. Warmzone professionals make it a point to immerse themselves in all things radiant heat related, keeping an ear to the ground when it comes to the latest and greatest in snow melting technology.
